Then teachers don’t really know how to measure it or make changes to the goal if it is not met. This workshop will help participants develop more specific IEP goals that are not only based on standards but focus in on teaching standards based grade level content at the functioning level of student with functional skills embedded in the instruction.

Leading Assessment for Learning
 Description
Are your teachers well-versed in monitoring student understanding throughout classroom instruction?  Do they have a "toolkit" of strategies to draw students more actively into the learning process? This workshop series will explore the philosophy and strategies associated with Assessment FOR Learning - those assessment experiences that happen during the learning process with the explicit intent of helping students learn more and building student ownership of their own learning.  Research shows that the effective use of Assessment for Learning strategies can have a profound impact on student achievement, with the greatest effects on the most struggling students.  These formative assessment approaches are particularly valuable in supporting and monitoring the progress of English learners, especially long-term ELs.

Redefining the 3Rs of Teaching & Learning
 Description
With the nationwide focus on accountability testing and a motto that reads “All Children Can Learn,” educators are wondering why students seem to be learning more yet achieving less.  It is true that students can learn…but not necessarily in the same way, or in the same amount of time.  The latest brain research tells us that brains are like thumbprints…no two are alike.  Let’s translate that research into practical classroom applications as we redefine the “Three Rs” of teaching and learning.  Leaving the training and skills and techniques that can be immediately transferred into classroom practice will enhance student success at all grade levels and in all content areas.  Reach to teach…go with the grain of the brain, not against it!

Informal Dynamic Social Thinking Assessment and Core Treatment Strategies for Home and School
 Description
This workshop is designed for parents and professionals to gain more specific knowledge about their students by using the Dynamic Informal Social Thinking Assessment, as described in Michelle’s book, Thinking About YOU Thinking About ME, 2nd Edition. Video clips of the informal assessment will demonstrate how all of us (diagnosticians, parents, paraprofessionals, treatment clinicians, etc.) can learn more about the inner minds of the individuals we are working with and why they need specific treatment strategies. This is very practical information. In the afternoon, participants will learn about Social Behavior Mapping, which explains how doing what is “expected” or “unexpected” in specific social situations impacts how those around us feel about our behaviors and how that also impacts how they treat us, which ultimately impacts how we feel about ourselves. This technique is now widely embraced as a core Social Thinking concept used for all students. We will also discuss basic concepts for running Social Thinking groups and explore specific teaching strategies that help to make the abstractions of the social world more concrete! We will explore how we make friends, distinguishing between 1) “being friendly,” 2) developing a friendship and 3) having a “bonded friend.” Furthermore, we will discuss how conversational skills are only one component to keeping friends; “hanging out” actually means we share space without necessarily talking! Parents and professionals give high praise for the practical nature of this workshop. Participants will be able to: 1. Describe how to assess “thinking with your eyes” and how this is different from telling what someone is looking at. 2. Describe the core components of the “Double Interview” and explain how that helps to assess perspective taking. 3. Describe how to fill out each of the 4 columns on Social Behavior Maps. 4. Describe the four steps of communication as a primary component to treatment for social skill deficits. 5. Define at least 3 different stages of making friends and how to teach students to advance from one stage to the next. 6. Discuss how to teach non-verbal aspects of maintaining a friend used when peers “hang out.” This Day 2 workshop is intended as a more advanced course for those who have attended the following workshops presented by Michelle, or are otherwise familiar with: Social Cognitive Deficits Across the School & Home Day:
The ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition, The Nuts and Bolts of Starting Social Thinking Programs: Practical Strategies for Assessment and LIFE, Thinking About YOU Thinking About ME, or for those who have read Michelle's books.

Social Thinking Across The Home and School Day: The ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition
 Description
This workshop is designed for parents and professionals to understand the inner mind of persons high on the autism spectrum (Asperger Syndrome, PDD-NOS or high-functioning autism), with ADHD, Nonverbal Learning Disability or have no working diagnosis but they fit the clinical picture! Participants will learn not only functional treatment strategies they can use both at school and at home, but they will also better understand why these students' react and respond the way they do. On this day we will introduce the I LAUGH model of Social Cognition which helps to demonstrate how social processing difficulties impact not only social skills but also the ability to work as part of a group and focus on specific academic tasks such as written expression, reading comprehension and organizational skills for many of our students. We will also address how best to approach writing IEP goals that impact real, albeit, slow change in how students understand the world around them. This workshop is noted for its depth in explaining WHY students with social skills difficulties have related academic challenges, which impact them across their school and home day. Participants will be able to: 1. Explain how teaching "think with your eyes" is different from simply teaching good eye contact. 2. Explain why a person with social skill deficits may have reading comprehension problems in the classroom. 3. Distinguish and describe the difference between a useful IEP goal and one that is of little benefit towards developing their program. 4. Describe how use of strategy cards can facilitate teaching of initiation of communication. 5. Explain how "thinking with your eyes" relates to auditory processing. 6. Explain how gestalt processing relates to written expression and organizational skills.
