Project ACHIEVE was designed to provide targeted assistance to those schools that have remained in Program Improvement for more than five years and over the past three years have not demonstrated growth in student achievement. Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) is a model of professional development in the area of language acquisition and literacy for grades K-8.  Project GLAD's National Training Center is located at the Orange County Department of Education in Costa Mesa, CA.  GLAD's basic training consists of a pre-requisite two-day overview and an in classroom demonstration (four or five days).

Anthony Muhammad, PhD, is a much sought-after education consultant. A practitioner for nearly 20 years, he has served as a middle school teacher, assistant principal, and principal, and as a high school principal. His tenure as a practitioner has earned him several awards as both a teacher and a principal. Dr. Muhammad’s most notable accomplishment came as principal of Levey Middle School in Southfield, Michigan, a National School of Excellence, where student proficiency on state assessments more than doubled in five years. Dr. Muhammad and the staff at Levey used the Professional Learning Communities at Work™ model of school improvement, and they have been recognized in several videos and articles as a model high-performing PLC.

The English Language Arts Advisory is an engaged group of professional leaders in literacy within San Diego County.  The Advisory strives to increase the level of communication and collaboration between all 42 school districts within the county, professional and community organizations, and partners within higher education.  The ELA Advisory hopes to share and grow dialogue around the latest local, state and national research and policy developments that affect the teaching and learning of English language arts to help each partner better serve and inform their local communities. An essential component of NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research mission is to enhance ocean science literacy, and to build interest in careers that support oceanrelated work. To help fulfill this mission, the Okeanos Explorer Education Materials Collection was developed to encourage educators and students to become personally involved with the voyages and discoveries of the Okeanos Explorer—America’s first Federal ship dedicated to Ocean Exploration. Join NOAA OER Facilitator and Scripps School Programs Coordinator, Judith Coats, as we introduce Volume 1 of the Okeanos Explorer Education Materials Collection: Why Do We Explore? Participants will learn how to use inquiry and standards-based lessons and other online resources that guide classroom inquiries into several important reasons for ocean exploration including Climate Change, Energy, Ocean Health and Human Health. Registration is required and space is limited. Educators who attend the full day will receive a $50 stipend. County, district, school, business, and community leaders are invited to join us at this special event, featuring Tim Magner, Executive Director for the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.  Our goal is to begin to develop common understanding and language about 21st Century Skills as we answer several key questions: What are 21st Century Skills?   What is their role in college and career readiness? What is being done in San Diego and California to infuse these skills into standards-based instruction? The keynote presentation and question-answer period will be held live at the main SDCOE campus, with video conference broadcasts at our north and south county campuses.  All three centers will have opportunities to participate in the question/answer portion of the program from their respective locations. These courses are the first in series of courses, it is anticipated that two additional courses will be offered during the 2012/2013 school year as part of the School Leadership Program. Purpose: Assist school districts in building the capacity of school leadership; facilitate the development of teacher-leaders who aspire to serve in leadership roles;  provide a high quality coherent professional development program that builds knowledge and leadership practice. Features: Aligned with the California professional Standards for Educational Leaders (CPSELS) Grounded in researchbased instrucitonal leadership practices and principals Informed by leadership needs identified by districts throughout the county

The retreat is designed to provide a review/update of the Comprehensive Student Assistance Program, new research and modifictions of exisiting models in the field of student intervention, practice of various multidisciplinary team approaches, panel discussions from successful programs, review of new information regarding Section 504, suspension/expulsion laws, NCLB Children in homeless situations, AB490, practicing the latest and best skills from intervention, facilitating student support groups, and insight classes, group discussions of successes and challenges Student Assistance Teams have encountered in their implementation of their student intervention programs, networking with other RTL schools.

County-wide Bilingual Directors Network meeting The Bilingual Directors meetings are held to provide current and accurate information regarding English Language Learners. Meetings include information, resources, discussion, problem solving, and an opportunity to meet people who have similar responsibilities. Occasionally, guest speakers are invited to provide expert advice on current issues.

Organization and comparison to CA standards, changes made to ensure that CA standards remain rigorous, using standards to scaffold or extend learning, and building capacity with a timeline to assure implementation of the new standards.

The San Diego County Office of Education and its affiliate sponsors are pleased to present a FREE workshop to share how the latest health research is helping to shape wellness programs that improve your bottom line.  Please join us in learning how you can design a wellness program tailored to your district and employees, easily and at little or no cost! Districts are encouraged to send staff to this workshop who can assist in leading a Wellness Program Initiative in the district.  A team of 3-5 employees is optimal.
